The first six months of 2019 has seen The Radio Department undertake our most ambitious – and ultimately most successful – series of live broadcasts to date.
ASOT in Utrecht
We began in Utrecht back in February, celebrating the 900th episode of Armin van Buuren’s A State of Trance. Hitting such a big milestone with Armin’s enduringly popular weekly show required a suitably large-scale celebration, so we broadcast his show live from the 35,000 capacity A State of Trance festival. The weekly edition now broadcasts live to 135 countries and an audience of over 40 million people.
Miami Winter Music Conference
The following month we were out in Miami for a series of live broadcasts from the newly rejuvenated Winter Music Conference. First up, we celebrated 20 years of Spinnin’ Records’ with the first ever live version of Spinnin’ Sessions coming direct from their pool party at the Spinnin’ Hotel, based at the heart of the action on Collins Avenue.
On day two embarked upon a new project we’re currently developing further by producing the first English language edition of acclaimed Dutch show The Boom Room. Guests dropping in for a chat included dance music royalty such as Todd Edwards, Paul Oakenfold, Irvin Welsh, Arther Baker and more.
Then we spent three days at Ultra Music Festival, building and running the entire operation for their branded UMF Radio throughout the festival. The event had moved to a brand new location for 2019, which presented new challenges and logistics to manage. Nevertheless, we successfully broadcast live from all areas of the site, while our roving reporters headed out to capture more atmosphere and interviews. All the headliners made sure to speak with us for UMF Radio, from Alesso, Nicky Romero,Fedde Le Grand to Carl Cox.
International Music Summit in Ibiza
Straight after that, the team headed to Ibiza, to mark five years of Nicole Moudaber’s In The MOOD show with a special live edition from a party at the top of the UNESCO world heritage site of Dalt Vila, the grand finale of 2019’s International Music Summit (IMS).
We built the studio in the pouring rain, struggling with torrents of water and trying to keep all the kit from being exposed to the elements. Thankfully, when it was time for Nicole’s set, the clouds had cleared and the party was very much in full swing.
The show was action-packed too, with guests including David Morales, Luciano, Adam Beyer, plus worldwide radio legends Pete Tong and Zane Lowe stopping by the studio for a chat and to show their support. We were live on over 50 of the best stations across the world offering backstage insights and interviews, far beyond simply streaming a feed from the stage.
Next: Tomorrowland in Belgium
Next to experience the full Radio Department live treatment with be Belgium’s Tomorrowland festival, where we will be syndicating another live episode of A State of Trance. Make sure you tune in via one of these stations to experience the power of live radio.
